2018 Honda Amaze launched in Mumbai

Honda has finally updated it’s popular and best-in-class compact sedan, the all-new Honda Amaze. And it is time to go big! The second generation of the Honda Amaze has been launched in Mumbai today starting at an introductory price of ₹5,59,900 (All India Ex-showroom) onward. India is the first country to get the all-new Honda Amaze.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Gaku Nakanishi, President & CEO, Honda Cars India said, “The all-new Amaze has been developed keeping the needs and aspirations of Indian customers in mind. It is a big promise from Honda and we are confident that the all-new Amaze will become one of the strongest pillar of HCIL business. This model will create new excitement in the segment and will provide us opportunity to expand our business across markets.

In line with our commitment to offer latest technologies to the Indian consumers, Amaze comes with advanced Diesel CVT which is Honda’s first such technology in the world and also an industry first in the Indian market.”

This second generation Honda Amaze has been developed at Honda R&D Asia Pacific Co. Ltd. with the focus to provide sleek solid design, overwhelming cabin and cargo space within 4 metres and outstanding driving performance with comfortable ride. Here is what’s that translates into in its second coming.

Exterior Design

Starting with the exterior design and looks, the Amaze has borrowed a lot of styling cues from its elder siblings like the Honda City, the Honda Civic & the Honda Accord. It gets the similar and crazy looking grille and face or as Honda prefers to call it ‘Solid Wing Face’. A striking-looking sedan, the Amaze’s rear looks more edgy than the outgoing model. Looks-wise I think it will take time to grow on you, but it will eventually. And yeah looks can be deceiving with the Honda Amaze. There are these wonderful looking headlamps with integrated signature LED Position lights. It gets front fog lamps. The ORVMs are power-adjustable, power-folding and have LED turn indicators. The wheels on the Amaze are fresh looking multi spoke alloy wheels.

The dimensions are 3995 mm long, 1695mm wide and 2470m of wheelbase, with a ground clearance of 170mm unloaded. The Honda Amaze is now bigger, 15mm wider and 5mm longer, with a 65mm longer wheelbase that creates a lot of leg room, shoulder room and rear head room! The luggage space has also increased by 20 litres and comes up to a total of 420 litres.

Interiors

The interiors of the new Honda Amaze feel a lot more roomier and they become even more entertaining (only on the VX variant honestly) thanks to the new Digipad 2.0 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible. The 2nd generation Amaze even surpasses the highly spacious cabin of the earlier model, especially for the rear seats, providing comfortable and premium feeling.

The steering wheel has buttons to control the audio, activate voice commands, hands-free and cruise control. The instrument panel comes with a white illumination meter for better readability and premium feel. You also get paddle shifters in the petrol CVT model. There is Push button start/stop with welcome illumination, the steering can be tilted. Honda has built-in smart storage in the front & rear doors and the central console. In the back, there is a rear armrest with cup holders.

It comes with features like MirrorLink an a Wi-Fi connection to a connected phone for live navigation information. There’s a reverse parking camera, steering mounted voice control and cruise control buttons.

Note that the S, V and VX variants get LED daytime-running lamps, 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, keyless go with push-button start, automatic climate control and a rear defogger. More about the variants and features is in a later section of this post.

Engine & Transmission

Under the hood, the Honda Amaze comes with four powertrain options – two in manual and two in automatic. The 1.2 litre Petrol pot producing 90hp and the 1.5-litre Diesel pot producing 100HP come mated with the options of a 5 speed manual or a CVT automatic. This makes Honda the second brand in India to offer a diesel-automatic combination in this segment after the Maruti Suzuki Dzire AMT.

Fuel Efficiency (Kitna deti hai?)

ARAI rated fuel efficiency figures for the Honda Amaze stand as follows: 19.5kmpl for the petrol-manual, 19.0kmpl for the petrol-manual, 27.8kmpl for the diesel-manual and 23.8kmpl for the diesel-automatic.

Colors

The second generation Honda Amaze comes in five exterior paint color options – dropping the less-popular-but-awesome-looking blue – Radiant Red Metallic (as seen at the Auto Expo 2018), Lunar Silver Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic (Grey), Golden Brown Metallic and White Orchid Pearl.

Variants & Pricing

With the correct pricing strategy, the Honda Amaze is going to give a tough competition to the Suzuki Dzire as they are very similarly priced. The Amaze will come in four variants – E, S, V and VX. Only the S and V variants come with CVT as option and only the latter gets paddle-shifters. The new Honda Amaze will be available at the following price points ex-showroom:

Variant + Transmission Option Petrol Diesel
Amaze E MT Rs 5.60 lakhs Rs 6.60 lakhs
Amaze S MT Rs 6.50 lakhs Rs 7.60 lakhs
Amaze S CVT Rs 7.40 lakhs Rs 8.40 lakhs
Amaze V MT Rs 7.10 lakhs Rs 8.20 lakhs
Amaze V CVT Rs 8.00 lakhs Rs 9.00 lakhs
Amaze VX MT Rs 7.58 lakhs Rs 8.68 lakhs

There is also an introductory offer (a good discount) for the first 20,000 bookings all across India. The Honda Amaze is now available at all Honda dealerships. Go test drive and experience the new bigger and better Honda Amaze today. You can also book one at a booking amount of just Rs 21,000 until the introductory offer is going on. Deliveries should begin by the end of this month.

Sales, Service & Warranty

The new Honda Amaze is being offered with a three-year unlimited-kilometer warranty as standard. Extended warranty for additional two years / unlimited kilometers can be availed. Service interval with the Honda Amaze will be 1 year /10,000 kms whichever is earlier. It will also be easier on the pocket to maintain if you take a 3-year Annual Maintenance Package, that brings the average cost to Rs 3,500 for Petrol and Rs 4,900 for the Diesel per year.

About Honda

The Honda Accord Hybrid is being sold as a CBU imported from Thailand. The company has two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities at Greater Noida, UP and Tapukara, Dist Alwar, Rajasthan. Honda has a strong sales and distribution network with 353 facilities in 241 cities spread across the country.

Opinion & Questions about the Honda Amaze

A lot of people have had the same question as me, why is Honda leaving out the top-end VX variant without a CVT option. Well I haven’t got a good answer for you on that, but from what I understand the costs could have been a major reason behind this decision. Leaving this behind, is the new Honda Amaze worth your attention and your money? Looking at the alternatives to the Honda Amaze, it does compete very aggressively with the likes of the Suzuki Dzire, the Volkswagen Ameo, the popular Tata Tigor, and the Ford Aspire. However, if I had to narrow down your choices considering overall package and value for money, I would make it a fight between the Honda Amaze and the Tata Tigor. Honestly, it does get #thebestcarblogever’s recommendation! I’ll see if I do get the car for a Test drive review soon!

What would your choices be? Would the Honda Amaze make the cut for you? Or do you have any questions about this car? Let me know in the comments below.

New Maruti Suzuki Swift launched at Auto Expo 2018 – Price, Variants, Review

Maruti Suzuki India launched the third generation Swift at the Auto Expo 2018 on 8th February. The all-new Swift comes with a new exciting design, enhanced performance and advanced safety features for passengers, children in the car and pedestrians. The Swift is now peppier, and roomier!

Mr Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki said that the Brand Swift is loved for its bold stance, strong shoulders and unmistakable road presence. Since its launch in 2005, Swift has been India’s favourite hatchback, selling over 1.8 million units. The new Swift is more spacious, it is loaded with new features that will thrill the customers.

What’s new?

For the first time, the Swift comes with the acclaimed auto gear shift technology as seen on Maruti Suzuki’s other offerings. It has a superior power-to-weight ratio as it is built on Suzuki’s innovative 5th gen HEARTECT platform. The new platform also gives it more strength and rigidity. Also new on the car is the single-aperture front grill complemented with an all-round seamless flow and sculpted body with strong shoulders. The wrap around windshield, along with the windows and the A and B pillars, extend to the back door glass and give a visual effect of having a floating roof.

The Swift gets new LED projector headlamps with a distinct design signature element on LED DRL and rear position lamp. It has some beautiful precision cut two-tone alloy wheels.

One of the most interesting things in this new Swift is that it comes with color coördinated interior theme accentuated by Urban Satin Chrome finish. The center console and instrument cluster are now better angled at the driver, making them easier to use than ever.

The new Swift has improved NVH levels. It now comes with a big 17.72 cm Smart Play Infotainment with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror link capabilities. Also integrated in this system is a wide-angle parking camera’s display. The SPI also has voice recognition with Indian accent English.

On the safety front, it comes with Dual airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX (child seat restraint system) as standard now. Numbers wise – the new Swift is 40 mm wider, has 20 mm longer wheel-base that created more cabin space.

One of India’s biggest question has an answer. Kitna deti hai?  It offers the best-in-segment fuel efficiency for both the engine options; 22.0 kmpl for the petrol and 28.4 kmpl for diesel. It is now 98% localized. And that’s why it is priced so well.

Engine, Variants and Pricing

The all-new Swift comes in two engine options: Petrol 1.2L VVT and Diesel DDiS 190. The engines are now tuned for superior performance coupled with highly balanced suspensions for better ride and comfort. The variants and pricing was announced at the launch at the Auto Expo 2018. To be very honest, it is priced very aptly. Check out the pricing and variants in the image below.

Colors

It comes in a new Pearl Metallic Lucent Orange, my favorite Pearl Metallic Midnight Blue, Solid Fire Red, Pearl Arctic White, Metallic Silky Silver, and Metallic Magma Grey.

Here are some photos of the Pearl Metallic Midnight Blue Swift:

Review

The Swift is really more feature loaded, more stylish and more bang for the buck than ever. It can easily become your choice of hatchback if you planning to buy one in the market today. Especially the interiors are now more welcoming and spacious. It does get #thebestcarblogever’s recommendation! I’ll see if I do get the car for a Test drive review soon!

Would I choose the new face-lifted Elite i20 or this all-new Swift? Watch out for my post on the i20 also launched at the Auto Expo 2018 to find out!

Automotive news for January 2018

In order to make the best of this situation, I am starting with this monthly automotive news summary series. So, here is a summary of all the interesting things that happened in the month of January 2018 (in case you missed it).

Configured close to what I would get the Urus as!

Lexus’s flagship luxury sedan LS500h was launched in India at the starting price of Rs 1.77 crore Ex-showroom. It is powered by a 3.5L V6 petrol engine combined with a 310.8kV Lithium ion battery, delivering 15.38 km/litre in a BS6 compliant vehicle. The 2018 Isuzu V-Cross was launched at Rs 14.26 lakhs (Standard variant) & Rs 15.76 lakhs (High variant), ex-showroom. While the powertrain remains the same, it is marginally expensive than the previous version. This is the first major upgrade which includes a host of new cosmetic changes, features and equipment on board. It gets LED DRLs instead of Fog Lamps, LED taillights and a redesigned tail-gate. More upgrades are in terms of safety – ABS as standard, Electronic Stability Control & Traction Control System are available on the top-end ‘High’ trim. Tata Nexon launched in Mumbai

Tata Nexon launched in Mumbai – First Review, Features, Pricing

Tata Motors launched the much-awaited compact SUV, the Tata Nexon. This is the 4th product that follows Tata’s new ‘Impact Design‘ philosophy after the Tiago, Hexa and the Tigor. And I must admit, Tata has really made a massive change in the impression I once had for Tata cars design-wise.

The exterior styling is coupe-inspired and feels really new, breaking out of the traditional boxy design for a compact SUV. The Tata Nexon comes with a dual tone exterior colour scheme, featuring Ivory White accents around the fog lamps on the front, across the shoulder line which merges at the back creating an X-shaped structure. The roof gets a sonic silver colour treatment, giving the Nexon its signature appearance.

It’s got projector headlamps for high-intensity road illumination, along with some stylish & distinctive feline-eye shaped Daytime Running Lights too. And the taillamps, it seems Tata has themselves decided to make use of after-market ones, that give it a really futuristic look.

Engine, Gearbox & Numbers of the Tata Nexon

First, I’ll go through what Tata has brought to the table with the new Nexon. Tata Nexon comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox in both Petrol and Diesel. These are the new 1.2L turbocharged Petrol and 1.5L turbocharged Diesel engines that Tata developed for the Nexon. Both the engines have been tuned to give superior performance. And when coupled with 3 Drive Modes (City, Eco & Sport), it will let you decide how you want the engine to perform. Tata Nexon is available in manual only now but an AMT version is slated to be available mostly in 2018.

Numbers for the Revotron 1.2L Petrol engine: 110PS of power and 170Nm of max torque.
Numbers for the Revotorq 1.5L Diesel engine: 110PS of power and 260Nm of max torque.

With the engine aside, let me tell you some more interesting things about the Nexon. It has one of the best ground clearance – 209mm. This is also thanks to the 16″ wheels with machine-cut alloys that look attractive. And to top it up, it has the lowest turning radius with EPAS (Electric Power Assisted Steering).

Interiors of the Tata Nexon

On the inside, it comes with a unique-looking three tone central console. This console also houses the ConnectNext Infotainment system – a 6.5″ floating touchscreen supporting connectivity via Android Auto. It is combined with an 8 -speaker system tuned by Harman for the perfect surround sound effect (on the top-end variant only). There is also a host of apps that support voice interaction for navigation, music control, making calls, reading and replying to Whatsapp messages. In addition to this, you also get voice alerts for warning functions, and such as, when you change Drive Mode as well.

The Tata Nexon comes with 350L of storage, which can be expanded using the 60:40 splitting and folding rear seats to make up to 690L of storage space. In terms of practicality, there are 31 utility spaces, mainly to keep a few water bottles, hold your cup of caffeine, and a dedicated slot for storing your umbrella too!

Features List

Some other, now common, but interesting features are Push-button Start, Smart Remote key with electric tailgate unlock & approach lamps, passive entry & passive start, reverse camera with dynamic guideways, reverse parking sensors, power adjustable & retractable outside mirrors, automatic climate control with rear AC vents. The electrically assisted Power Steering has Phone & Media controls mounted on it.

Safety

On the safety part, the Tata Nexon comes with features like ISOFIX Child Restrain System for rear seats, dual front airbags and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with corner stability control as standard across all variants. It also comes with adjustable front & rear headrests for impact protection, brake assist for shorter stopping distance in emergency braking.

Variants, Color & Pricing

The Tata Nexon will be available in four trims: XE, XM, XT & XZ+ and 5 colour options: Vermont Red, Moroccan Blue, Seattle Silver, Glasgow Grey & Calgary White. One of the biggest deciding factors for the success of the Nexon has to be pricing. It has both the advantage & disadvantage of being late to the party. But it has allowed Tata to take care of what has been missing on some of the competition. The biggest disadvantage for the Nexon is the loss of market share to best-selling competitors at the moment. But the way Tata has priced the Nexon, it can regain it if the Nexon sells in good numbers, which I hope will be the case. The pricing of the Nexon is as follows:

Ex-showroom
Mumbai
XE XM XT XZ+ XZ+ with
Dual Tone Roof*
Petrol 5,87,000 6,51,900 7,31,900 8,46,900 8,61,900
Diesel 6,87,000 7,41,900 8,16,900 9,31,900 9,46,900

*Dual-tone roof option available only with Moroccan Blue & Vermont Red body colour.

Final First Impressions:

This was the first time I had seen the Nexon in flesh. It has a very distinctive body styling, unlike the competition. Looking at the images, you might have mixed feelings about it. But if you are in the market to buy a new compact SUV this festive season, be sure to ‘experience’ the Nexon – see it, drive it, feel it. It might just cut out and be the one for you, especially the diesel one. For more details on the Tata Nexon, check its website here.

There are going to be some experience events for the Nexon, called the Nexon Skill Arena, in multiple cities soon. Keep an eye out for them as they should be a really good place to test the hell of out the Nexon.

I’m looking forward to doing a test-drive of the Nexon myself. If you have any questions, ask me in the comments below or message me on Instagram: @thebestcarblogever. Follow me for more updates! 🙂 Drive Safe!

Honda WR-V launched in Mumbai

Honda WRV launched in Mumbai

We were waiting for Honda’s offering in the sub 4-meter compact SUV segment for long time now. And here is the Honda WRV. It is quite frankly late to the party, but the amount of efforts that Honda R&D India have put in along with Honda R&D Japan is commendable. For starters, they have given the WRV its own unique look. The front and the rear of the WRV have been given a differentiable character. The buffed up look is definitely not ugly, in fact it feels like a refreshed design style compared to that of the Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport. The design of the WRV keeps growing on you, the more you look at it.

The late entry is also justified by the fact that Honda didn’t want to just add some plastic cladding to the Jazz and sell it like a compact SUV, which is the feeling one gets from the Hyundai i20 Active, the Volkswagen Cross Polo, and the Toyota Etios Cross – all of which look almost like the car they are based on.

The WRV has been extensively worked upon. It has larger dimensions, a slightly larger boot, and a tad better ground clearance compared to the Jazz. See the table below:

  Honda Jazz Honda WR-V
Length 3955 mm 3999 mm (+ 44 mm)
Width 1694 mm 1734 mm (+ 40 mm)
Height 1544 mm 1601 mm (+ 57 mm)
Wheelbase 2530 mm 2555 mm (+ 25 mm)
Ground Clearance 165 mm 188 mm (+ 23 mm)
Boot Space 354 L 363 L (+ 9 L)

The WRV’s suspension is not the same as the one in Jazz, and is designed give greater roll stability and improved rigidity for better handling performance. It has the Mac-Pherson strut front suspension and the Twisted torsion beam rear suspension.

It shares its engine with the Jazz – the 1.2L Petrol and 1.5L Diesel, but they have been tuned to work the best with the extra 50 kg that the Jazz gained to become the WRV. The petrol engine comes with a 5-speed Manual Transmission and the Diesel engine comes with a 6-speed Manual Transmission. There are no automatic variants available and Honda does not plan to offer them any time soon. The numbers are as follows:

1.2 litre i-VTEC Petrol
1.5 litre i-DTEC Diesel
Max Power
90 PS @ 6000 RPM 100 PS @ 3600 RPM
Peak Torque
110 Nm @ 4800 RMP 200 Nm @ 1750 RPM
Transmission 5-speed manual 6-speed manual
Mileage (ARAI)
17.5 KMPL 25.5 KMPL

It will be an easier choice to make here since there are only two variants  (S and VX) in both the Petrol and Diesel offerings to choose from.
