2018 Honda Amaze launched in Mumbai

Honda has finally updated it’s popular and best-in-class compact sedan, the all-new Honda Amaze. And it is time to go big! The second generation of the Honda Amaze has been launched in Mumbai today starting at an introductory price of ₹5,59,900 (All India Ex-showroom) onward. India is the first country to get the all-new Honda Amaze.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Gaku Nakanishi, President & CEO, Honda Cars India said, “The all-new Amaze has been developed keeping the needs and aspirations of Indian customers in mind. It is a big promise from Honda and we are confident that the all-new Amaze will become one of the strongest pillar of HCIL business. This model will create new excitement in the segment and will provide us opportunity to expand our business across markets.

In line with our commitment to offer latest technologies to the Indian consumers, Amaze comes with advanced Diesel CVT which is Honda’s first such technology in the world and also an industry first in the Indian market.”

This second generation Honda Amaze has been developed at Honda R&D Asia Pacific Co. Ltd. with the focus to provide sleek solid design, overwhelming cabin and cargo space within 4 metres and outstanding driving performance with comfortable ride. Here is what’s that translates into in its second coming.

Exterior Design

Starting with the exterior design and looks, the Amaze has borrowed a lot of styling cues from its elder siblings like the Honda City, the Honda Civic & the Honda Accord. It gets the similar and crazy looking grille and face or as Honda prefers to call it ‘Solid Wing Face’. A striking-looking sedan, the Amaze’s rear looks more edgy than the outgoing model. Looks-wise I think it will take time to grow on you, but it will eventually. And yeah looks can be deceiving with the Honda Amaze. There are these wonderful looking headlamps with integrated signature LED Position lights. It gets front fog lamps. The ORVMs are power-adjustable, power-folding and have LED turn indicators. The wheels on the Amaze are fresh looking multi spoke alloy wheels.

The dimensions are 3995 mm long, 1695mm wide and 2470m of wheelbase, with a ground clearance of 170mm unloaded. The Honda Amaze is now bigger, 15mm wider and 5mm longer, with a 65mm longer wheelbase that creates a lot of leg room, shoulder room and rear head room! The luggage space has also increased by 20 litres and comes up to a total of 420 litres.

Interiors

The interiors of the new Honda Amaze feel a lot more roomier and they become even more entertaining (only on the VX variant honestly) thanks to the new Digipad 2.0 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible. The 2nd generation Amaze even surpasses the highly spacious cabin of the earlier model, especially for the rear seats, providing comfortable and premium feeling.

The steering wheel has buttons to control the audio, activate voice commands, hands-free and cruise control. The instrument panel comes with a white illumination meter for better readability and premium feel. You also get paddle shifters in the petrol CVT model. There is Push button start/stop with welcome illumination, the steering can be tilted. Honda has built-in smart storage in the front & rear doors and the central console. In the back, there is a rear armrest with cup holders.

It comes with features like MirrorLink an a Wi-Fi connection to a connected phone for live navigation information. There’s a reverse parking camera, steering mounted voice control and cruise control buttons.

Note that the S, V and VX variants get LED daytime-running lamps, 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, keyless go with push-button start, automatic climate control and a rear defogger. More about the variants and features is in a later section of this post.

Engine & Transmission

Under the hood, the Honda Amaze comes with four powertrain options – two in manual and two in automatic. The 1.2 litre Petrol pot producing 90hp and the 1.5-litre Diesel pot producing 100HP come mated with the options of a 5 speed manual or a CVT automatic. This makes Honda the second brand in India to offer a diesel-automatic combination in this segment after the Maruti Suzuki Dzire AMT.

Fuel Efficiency (Kitna deti hai?)

ARAI rated fuel efficiency figures for the Honda Amaze stand as follows: 19.5kmpl for the petrol-manual, 19.0kmpl for the petrol-manual, 27.8kmpl for the diesel-manual and 23.8kmpl for the diesel-automatic.

Colors

The second generation Honda Amaze comes in five exterior paint color options – dropping the less-popular-but-awesome-looking blue – Radiant Red Metallic (as seen at the Auto Expo 2018), Lunar Silver Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic (Grey), Golden Brown Metallic and White Orchid Pearl.

Variants & Pricing

With the correct pricing strategy, the Honda Amaze is going to give a tough competition to the Suzuki Dzire as they are very similarly priced. The Amaze will come in four variants – E, S, V and VX. Only the S and V variants come with CVT as option and only the latter gets paddle-shifters. The new Honda Amaze will be available at the following price points ex-showroom:

There is also an introductory offer (a good discount) for the first 20,000 bookings all across India. The Honda Amaze is now available at all Honda dealerships. Deliveries should begin by the end of this month.

Sales, Service & Warranty

The new Honda Amaze is being offered with a three-year unlimited-kilometer warranty as standard. Extended warranty for additional two years / unlimited kilometers can be availed. Service interval with the Honda Amaze will be 1 year /10,000 kms whichever is earlier. It will also be easier on the pocket to maintain if you take a 3-year Annual Maintenance Package, that brings the average cost to Rs 3,500 for Petrol and Rs 4,900 for the Diesel per year.

Opinion & Questions about the Honda Amaze

A lot of people have had the same question as me, why is Honda leaving out the top-end VX variant without a CVT option. Well I haven’t got a good answer for you on that, but from what I understand the costs could have been a major reason behind this decision. Leaving this behind, is the new Honda Amaze worth your attention and your money? Looking at the alternatives to the Honda Amaze, it does compete very aggressively with the likes of the Suzuki Dzire, the Volkswagen Ameo, the popular Tata Tigor, and the Ford Aspire. However, if I had to narrow down your choices considering overall package and value for money, I would make it a fight between the Honda Amaze and the Tata Tigor. Honestly, it does get #thebestcarblogever’s recommendation! I’ll see if I do get the car for a Test drive review soon!

Honda Amaze is bold, aggressive looking and in many ways better than the old car. You get more features as standard, a better looking cabin and a whole lot of convenience as you get the CVT gearbox in both petrol and diesel engine options.
