Automotive news for January 2018

It seems like yesterday that 2018 started. But January is already over. And the amount of time I got to sit and write blog posts in the first month is very evident. In order to make the best of this situation, I am starting with this monthly automotive news summary series. So, here is a summary of all the interesting things that happened in the month of January 2018 (in case you missed it).

New Cars Launched In India

Kwid Special Edition

The Renault Kwid Special Edition was launched at the starting price of Rs 2.66 lakhs ex-showroom. It has some lime-accent graphics and highlights. One of the best parts of this Special Edition is that it comes with Reverse Parking Sensors as standard irrespective of the variant you choose.

New Audi Q5

The 2018 Q5 was launched at the starting price of Rs 53.25 lakhs ex-showroom. It has grown in dimensions and now mimics the design of the larger Q7. It comes with the same 2.0L TDI engine, but mated to a new 7-speed S tronic automatic transmission. It does 0-100 kmph in 7.8 seconds and has a top speed of 218 kmph. ARAI claimed fuel efficiency is 17.01 kmpl. There are no plans for a petrol-engine Q5 for now. Direct competitors for the Q5 are the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Land Rover Discovery Sport, BMW X3 and the Volvo XC60.

Datsun redi-GO AMT

Datsun launched the AMT variant of its small car redi-GO at the starting price of Rs 3.80 lakhs ex-showroom, but only with the 999cc 3-cyl petrol engine. In terms of pricing, it is cheaper that Kwid AMT. This version claims a fuel efficiency of 25.17 kmpl.

Lamborghini Urus

The first Super SUV, Lamborghini Urus was launched here in India just 38 days after its global unveil at the price of Rs 3 crore ex-showroom. The Urus comes with a 4.0L Twin Turbo V8 engine, in the front of the car. The engine produces 641 bhp and 850 Nm of peak torque. This performance SUV can do 0-100 kmph in just 3.6 seconds and then 200 kmph in 12.8 seconds. It has the top speed of 305 kmph, which also makes it the fastest SUV in the world. It is based on the MLB platform, which is also the base for the Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7.

Configured close to what I would get the Urus as!

Lexus LS500h

Lexus’s flagship luxury sedan LS500h was launched in India at the starting price of Rs 1.77 crore Ex-showroom. It is powered by a 3.5L V6 petrol engine combined with a 310.8kV Lithium ion battery, delivering 15.38 km/litre in a BS6 compliant vehicle. The LS 500h goes up against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Audi A8 L and the Jaguar XJ L and in fact is here at a great time considering both Mercedes-Benz and Audi are planning to launch their updated flagship sedans in 2018.

Isuzu V-Cross 2018

The 2018 Isuzu V-Cross was launched at Rs 14.26 lakhs (Standard variant) & Rs 15.76 lakhs (High variant), ex-showroom. While the powertrain remains the same, it is marginally expensive than the previous version. This is the first major upgrade which includes a host of new cosmetic changes, features and equipment on board. It gets LED DRLs instead of Fog Lamps, LED taillights and a redesigned tail-gate. More upgrades are in terms of safety – ABS as standard, Electronic Stability Control & Traction Control System are available on the top-end ‘High’ trim. Also a new Ruby Red exterior color has been introduced along with the previous Brown, Black, Silver, Grey and White options.

Range Rover Velar

The Range Rover Velar was launched at Rs 78.83 lakhs ex-showroom. It is positioned between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. It competes with the BMW X6 and the Porsche Macan. Globally, the Velar has received a great response – it has pre-booked till March 2018 and the deliveries were supposed to start January 2018.

Range Rover Evoque Landmark Edition

The Range Rover Evoque Landmark Edition marks the model completing six years in India. It is priced at Rs 50.20 lakh (ex-showroom). The ‘Landmark Edition’ is based on the SE variant of the Evoque and gets minor exterior and interior updates. It will be offered in three exterior paint colours (including the Luminescent Moraine Blue you see in the photo below). Also part of this limited edition are gloss-black 18-inch alloy wheels, a new body kit and body-colored lower door cladding. There is also a graphite finish for the grille, a Carpathian Gray finish for the fender vent and tailgate lettering and the Contrast roof.

On the inside, the Landmark Edition gets grained ebony leather seats with light lunar stitching in contrast; with the centre console finished in dark satin-brushed aluminium. It is comes equipped with a gesture-operated powered tailgate, along with all the other features of the SE variant.

The Evoque Landmark Edition is available only with the 180hp, 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel engine; it’s not offered with the 240hp 2.0-litre petrol motor.

Mercedes S350d BS-VI edition

India got its first BS-VI (Bharat Stage 6) complaint vehicle – the new Mercedes-Benz S350d. It complies with the Emission standards which all automobile manufacturers need to comply by 2020. The S 350 d features the most powerful diesel car in Mercedes-Benz history.

Maserati Levante

Maserati also launched its first SUV, the Levante at the starting price of Rs 1.75 Crore ex-showroom. It comes powered by a 3.0L V6 diesel engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This engine develops 275PS of power, enough to do 0-100 kmph in 6.9 seconds. The Levante has a claimed top speed of 230 kmph. And yes, it can go off-road as it has an all-wheel drive system. The Maserati Levante competes with the Jaguar F-Pace, Porsche Cayenne and the BMW X6 in India. All of these come powered with a diesel engine and are priced upwards of Rs 1 crore.

Looking back at 2017

As the year is going to end in a few hours, I think it comes naturally to sit down, look back at what happened during the year. Almost everyone on my Instagram feed is sharing their best nine photos, and everyone on my facebook feed is sharing their holiday pictures or ‘we-got-no-plans-for-new-years-eve’ jokes.

And I am here sitting and writing down this post, especially for those who plan to spend their New Years Eve doing some reading on the Internet! 😀 Let’s get to some of the best things, worst things, lessons of 2017.

January 2017

I welcomed the new year with this quote and tried to stick with it!

“Never let your failures go to your heart or you success go to your head” – Soichiro Honda.

And then followed it up with multiple dates with the Tata Hexa. First I got to experience the capabilities of the Hexa at the Tata Hexa Experience event in Mumbai! And then the Tata Hexa was officially launched a few days later. Just as I thought that January couldn’t get better, there was the Autocar Performance Show that I got to attend. Amidst all the good cars, I also got to see John Abraham at the opening ceremony of the APS 2017! 😀

Go to Instagram to see more posts!!

February 2017

And then came the date with one of the hottest hatch in the country – the Volkswagen GTI! And this was an experience I cannot forget! This two-door beast left me so speechless, I ended up making my first video of 2017 to share the experience with you! xD Check out this post to read a little about what GTI is and see the video below!

And then February ended in a very classic way with the VCCCI Vintage Car Fiesta 2017!

March 2017

March was filled with dates with the Honda WR-V & the Tata Tigor. Two different yet stylish looking cars of 2017!

Mors photos and videos are on Instagram!

April 2017

April was the best as it started with meeting my creative self again after a long time! I started with the #100DaysOfSketchingCars campaign. And then I couldn’t continue with it sadly, but it’s never too late and you never know! Positive hopes!

Check out the sketches I made on this separate page that I will definitely try to update with more soon.

May 2017

May was a little slow, I guess too hot for any car manufacturer to host any events and for me to do anything. 😛 I know it sounds like an excuse but what more can I say about my laziness. I did post one interesting photo on Instagram and here it is!

June 2017

It started with making new friends and forging relations with a place that I didn’t know I would keep re-visiting! I attended the re-opening of the 3S showroom and facility of Mercedes-Benz Shaman Wheels, which was accompanied by the launch of the E-Class E220d. And as the rains started, I finally went on a short road trip with one of my brother-from-another-mother. Just the perfect way to enjoy the rains!!

July 2017

July was a mixed bag. Two sketches, one spotting, one time where I lost two wheels and when for a two-wheeler event 😀 and one post about a friend who took time and efforts to show love to his ‘Jewel’ Ciaz!

August 2017

Someone helped me change my perceptions of Hybrids, especially a Toyota Prius! 😀 Thank you!!

September 2017

It started with an event at Mercedes-Benz Shaman Wheels – Celebrating Bertha Benz and the women who love cars! Although not much of a wedding season here in India, a friend got committed to his love – the Jaguar F-PACE! 😀 (Read the post below!) And then I went on a date with the Tata Nexon on its launch day.

Once upon a time, there was a boy. He went to the Jaguar showroom. XE was the one he had been thinking about. But then he saw her beautiful sister F-PACE. XE became his EX. And the boy ran away with F-PACE! 😂😂😂 . Congratulations @fla5hburn on your new lady! Treat her well! And make sure you keep going on those long drives with her! 😁😉 . Looks like ironman in this shot! 😜 . #newcar #jaguar #jaguarxe #jaguarfpace #thebestcarblogever . #jaguarxf #jagaurxfrs #jaguarxj #jaguarxjl #jaguarxkr #jaguarxkrs #jaguarftype #car #suv #ironman #jaguarlove #jaguarindia #carlife #carlifestyle #cars #carcrazy #loveforcars #carporn #carsofinstagram #carsindia #automotivedesign #automobile #automotive #lifestyle #motivation

A post shared by The Best CAR Blog Ever (@thebestcarblogever) on

October 2017

As the year came closer, I think it just became more and more exciting! I went on a spotting spree, a classic one, mind you! And I also did my first Instagram series: “Things Car Manufacturers don’t do anymore!” It was a herculean task making this one happen and I am really glad I could do it! Go check this post where I have them summarized!

November 2017

My birthday month couldn’t get any better than this! Spotted a Lancer Evo IX, a first-time seeing it for real and feeling the Evo-lutionary vibes I also attended the launch of the Land Rover Discovery but I could neither post anything about it on my blog here nor on Instagram. 🙁 One more thing happened, met someone I look up to and feel inspired by – I’ll reveal about it in the next week in my Instagram stories. Don’t forget to follow if you aren’t already! There is one more news – even I got committed just like my friend got hooked in September! Revealing her next week!! 😀

And I couldn’t imagine ending November like the way I did – driving the Ford Mustang GT!!

More Mustang on my Instagram!

December 2017

December has been quiet for me – but not for the rest of Mumbai, because we had a Ferrari 70th Anniversary celebration Drive! I couldn’t attend it because of personal commitments. 🙁 Much of December has been kind of a throwback, as I shared some previous pending posts and tried to converse with as many people as possible.

Thank You 2017!

I also made a lot of new friends across this eventful year – you guys know who you are – and I hope we keep talking, meeting and sharing the love for cars! Thanks for being a part of my journey so far!

I won’t make any resolutions for the coming year, but I know there is a lot I can do and I will do! Keep watching! See you in 2018! Till then drive safe!

Celebrating Bertha Benz

Bertha Benz, a woman that has all my respect and praise for her work and the role she played. If she had not done what she did, we would not be living in a world full of cars, let alone reading about some fast cars on my blog.

We all know about Dr Carl Benz, how he in 1886 patented the world’s first automobile vehicle. The Patent Motor Wagen was a horseless carriage powered by a single cylinder motor. Carl unveiled his invention to the world in 1886. But contrary to his expectations, it failed to create any interest and people didn’t want to buy it.

Carl Benz kept on making improvements to the Motor Wagen and identified each iteration with a number. He made the Benz Patent Motor-Wagen No 3 in 1888. But by this time, Carl was losing his patience and did not want to continue working further on this.

Bertha had fallen in love with Carl when he explained his early drafts and plans of building such an automobile to her. She was interested in locomotives from an early age, thanks to some exposure from her father. So this idea had not just blown her mind but took her heart too. She wanted to support Carl with his vision and when Carl was about to give up, Bertha decided to do something herself about the situation.

This was a time when women were not treated equal and given the restricted to just doing household chores and bringing up kids. She decided to show the world what an automobile could do. In August 1888, together with her sons Richard and Eugen, and without the knowledge of her husband, Bertha Benz took to the road with the Benz Patent Motor-Wagen No 3. She was undeterred by the fact that some stretches of the roads, which were normally used only by horses and carriages, were anything but suitable for the automobile. Lack of fuel, clogged valves or wiring chafed-through to breaking point – she found a solution to every difficulty on the journey. She resorted to a garter, a hat-pin, and plundered the ligroin stocks of pharmacies along the route. When the fuel ran out completely outside Wiesloch, the Motor Car had to be pushed for several kilometers. Bertha got down herself to help.

Because of her persistence and this long journey, the Motor-wagen gained attention. And finally Carl made a total of 25 of these and sold them between 1886 and 1893. It also gained a title of being the world’s first mass production automobile.

Bertha Benz Memorial Drive & Treasure Hunt

Mercedes-Benz Shaman Wheels had organized a drive and treasure hunt event on Sunday, August 20, 2017 for women to take part and win exciting Mercedes-Benz Collectables. This was organized for the first time in India.

The event details

About 8 to 10 teams had participated in this wonderful adventure, in spite of heavy rains that day. Here are some photos from the event:

More about Carl & Bertha Benz

There is a lot to know about these two of the many legends of the automobile world. Here are a few good links if you are interested to read more.

  1. Bertha Benz on the Mercedes-Benz website
  2. Bertha Benz on the Bertha Benz Memorial Route website
  3.  A short movie ‘Carl & Bertha’ was made by Mercedes in german language to honor them. You can view the making of the film here. The movie is only available in german language with no english subtitles so I am not linking it here. If you find one do let me know, I’ll update it in this post.

Thank you to the wonderful people at Shaman for inviting me to this event! I had a good time at this event. I also got a chance to spend some time with this particular beauty, the SLC43 AMG:

I’ll share more photos with the SLC on my Instagram, so don’t forget to follow me @thebestcarblogever. There are also photos from when I had visited Mercedes-Benz Shaman Wheels at Kalina, Santacruz before.

Detroit Auto Show 2016

As promised in my previous post, here are the best production/ production-ready Cars of the Detroit Auto Show 2016!

1. 2017 Ford GT

The 2017 Ford GT showcased at the Detroit Auto Show, is expected to go in production in late 2016. This is just one of the 12 Ford Performance Vehicles that will come by 2020. The Ford GT features a rear-wheel drive, a mid-mounted engine, and a sleek, aerodynamic, two-door coupe body shell. It is powered by the next-generation twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6, the most powerful EcoBoost production engine yet, producing more than 600hp.

2. 2017 Infiniti Q60 Sports Coupe

The 2017 Infiniti Q60 Sports Coupe is production ready and will be available in the following variants: 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine producing either 300hp or 400hp; a 2.0-litre gasoline engine that is turbo-charged to produce 208hp. The base model will come with an aluminum trim on the inside, with an option to choose black wood. The higher end models will be available with carbon-fiber highlights and an option to choose white or red leather seating. The Infiniti Q60S is like a really awesome comeback for Nissan’s luxury brand – as it was highly loved by critics starting from concept model itself carrying over almost every appreciated thing into the production version. The Q60S feels like one of the best cars ever from Infiniti till date. It has  a really functional design that looks stunning too. In fact, the Q60S could easily be the car I would want to drive straight out of the Detroit Auto Show! 😀

3. The new BMW M2 Coupe

The first M line car in the 2-series for BMW was showcased at the Detroit Auto Show – the M2 Coupe which is a rear-wheel drive, high performance sports coupe. It is powered by a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder engine which produces 365hp (one for each day! 😀 – sorry for the bad joke). BMW claims the M2 can do 0-62miles (0-100kms) in 4.3 seconds and comes with a top-speed of 155 mph (250 kmph).

4. 2017 Chrysler Pacifica

The new Chrysler Pacifica (or Chrysler Town & Country as it was previously called) is one of the most significant launches for FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), as they have tried to reinvent the minivan segment they originally created. It is a attempt to make the minivan compelling again for the new generation. One important fact is that Pacifica will be available in both conventional and plug-in hybrid versions. There is a lot of new tech coming in the Pacifica – a 360 degree camera view, automatic parallel and perpendicular parking, forward-collision warning & mitigation, lane-departure warning & mitigation, rear backup sensing with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control that can bring the Pacifica to a complete halt and hold it there, and several other active & passive systems. Feels like the minivan is here to stay and gain a good number of sales!

5. 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor

The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor was originally unveiled at the 2015 edition of the Detroit Auto Show, and this year Ford has taken the chance to introduce the Raptor in its SuperCrew form. It is based on the aluminum-bodied F-150 SuperCrew. The Raptor SuperCrew rides on a 145.0-inch wheelbase—a foot longer than the standard SuperCab-based model—and has four front-hinged doors and the SuperCrew’s 5.5-foot bed. It is powered by the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine, whose output hasn’t been disclosed by Ford.

6. 2017 Mercedes Benz E-Class

The E-Class finally gets the new design language that was originally seen on the S-Class back in 2014, which was later adopted by the C-Class last year. Called the “sensually purified” design language, the new E-Class unveiled here at the Detroit Auto Show might look much like its other siblings until you see the badge! It carries the new iconic “stardust effect” taillamps, futuristic LED matrix headlamps and the signature grill and windows. There are a few dimensional changes on the E-Class – 2.6 inches have been added between the axles and 1.7 inches overall. Height and width of the new E-Class are down a fraction of an inch. The wheel sizes are up to 19 & 20 inches. It will be offered in Luxury & Sport flavours.

What’s interesting here is that the new car comes with loads of new tech which not even available on the current S-Class! To name a few – semi-autonomous driving, autonomous lane changing, driver-supervised autonomous parking, the ability to use your cellphone as the key, highly improved auto-braking system.

The E300 is the first of the new E-Class cars that is confirmed. The others set to get the new E-Class treatment are the E63 AMG & a new powerful E450 AMG, as also plug-in hybrid & diesel versions. Also expected are the Coupe & Convertible versions too!

7. 2017 Mercedes Benz SLC

This is actually the SLK rebadged as per the nomenclature changes that Mercedes had announced at the end of 2014. The SLK badge will be dropped after being in use for close to 20 years. Since the SLK was close to the C-Class, it will now wear the SLC badge. In the 2017 edition unveiled at he Detroit Auto Show, it gets a facelift and a new powertrain. On the exterior, you have the updated modern grill, optional LED headlamps and new “sensually purified” taillamps. On the interior, most of the things remain the same with minor updates to the controls and trim. It will continue to possess the two features unique to this class – the Airscarf, a ventilator system that blows warm air at your neck, and a panaromic glass roof whose opacity can be changed at the push of a button.

The big update is under the hood – a twin-turbocharged V6 in place of the V8 in the AMG version. The SLK350’s 3.5-litre V6 is history. The SLK300 with the 2.0-litre turbo engine will return as the SLC300 producing 241hp. The SLK55 AMG will be replaced by the Mercedes-AMG SLC43, for which the pictures will do a better talking (Love the red!).

That’s enough drooling for one post! There’s more from the Detroit Auto Show coming soon – concept cars and special mentions! Stay tuned for another post about the Detroit Auto Show! Till then do follow the blog on Instagram @thebestCARblogever and on Facebook. 🙂

Why I started ‘The Best CAR Blog Ever!’

What’s this? Why am I not writing about CARS and starting a post on why I started writing a blog?? Relax! I know this is ‘The Best CAR Blog Ever!!‘. I haven’t forgotten, its all about cars, more cars…just cars! Let me tell you about when I started blogging.

For those who know me and have followed this blog since the beginning, they know I started out in October 2012. But that will not tell you about the reasons or the situation at that time.

I was pursuing my Diploma in Journalism, had reached half-way through it & it wasn’t that easy. I put in efforts & equally learned from my mistakes. For the first time, I had pursued writing at lengths. From the admission interview to all the classes that I attended, I had only one answer about my interest in journalism – “I am interested in getting into Automobile Journalism.” I was exceptional in terms of my choice then; there were many brilliant students (most) with mainstream journalism interests.

I felt a bit disconnected, because I would be speaking Latin & Greek for others, if I spoke about automobiles. And neither could I really speak well on other fields. I tried to write in other streams, I wouldn’t be able to even beat my previous assignments.

So, some how I needed to write about what I really wanted to do. A professor suggested me to take up blogging as a practice for topics of my interest (and still improve on my writing on the rest of the topics of the class).

That’s where my blogging journey started; my journey of excellence. I had a different take when I started out, I focused on covering news, but I would be left behind (I was new to writing and slow!). Then I understood, even if I don’t cover each & every news, somebody else would. I had to only focus on my writing, my topics. If I want to do better, I need to strive for excellence. And here is what I wrote about excellence in my previous post:

“It is about giving your best, exceeding expectations & setting standards for others. It is the constant achievement through hard work, dedication and discipline… ” –

The CARS of Excellence from Mercedes-Benz - My previous post
The CARS of Excellence from Mercedes-Benz – My previous post

I did the same what Mercedes-Benz did; we strove for excellence. They achieved their goals, they set a benchmark at making the best luxury cars & were awarded for it. I had the goal of making this ‘The Best CAR Blog…Ever!’, I have written posts that I have been appreciated for, I got rewarded with a chance to be part of interesting car events, meet various people from the industry and interact with them, all at the completion of just a year in blogging.

Here is one thing that Mercedes-Benz and I would agree on & follow too:

The Habit of Excellence
The Habit of Excellence

Make it your habit too, in whatever you do, not just blogging! Its your life; so take excellence very personally!

Share your thoughts on what excellence means to you!
Do leave your comments, rate this post and share if you like! 😀

Cars with the ability to show what excellence means

When discussing about CARS,  one or more of the people in the conversation will say “This FOO is an excellent car! That BAR is no match for this one!”. We would have our own choice and thinking of what makes for an excellent car. But there is a specific set of CARS that have proven this year what excellence means.

Before getting to these cars, let me clear what I think of excellence to be (and should be).

Excellence is the quality of being excellent. It is about giving your best, exceeding expectations & setting standards for others. It is the constant achievement through hard work, dedication and discipline.

But, excellence is NOT success. There is a difference. Success is when we compare our achievements with what other people have done already. Excellence, on the other hand, is when we compare our achievements with what we have done before; and when we see that we have grown, we have beaten our own records and achieved — excellence.

“Competition with oneself, is the way to excellence.”

You’ll find lots of links to explain you on that topic, so lets get to what we were talking about here.  So which cars have i think  proven their excellence??

Take a look at this.

Their excellence has been appreciated and reflected in the awards they have got. Being awarded as the ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ at six different award events of a single year is no joke. It is a sign of excellence. If you’ve seen any of the award ceremonies of this year, you will have guessed by now, I am talking about Mercedes-Benz.

It hasn’t ended there. Ten other awards (16 in total), across various other categories have been awarded. The A-Class, B-Class, E-Class, the E63 AMG and the GL-Class have won these awards.

Here is a snap to show who got what!

Mercedes-Benz marked 2013 as the ‘Year of Offensive’ and launched fascinating products, expanded its network spread and provided its customers value-added after sales service, according to their strategy. Setting benchmarks in the luxury segment (for its competitors), is their strategy of the ‘Year of Excellence’ – 2014.

They have already began the year’s celebrations, by the successful launch of the new S-Class, while showcasing the CLA 45 AMG, GLA and the M-Guard at the Indian Auto Expo 2014. [Photo Gallery:  #MercAtAutoExpo2014]

Here is what they’ve got to say, while they celebrate – “When you pursue the path of excellence, the world makes you a winner.”

This is what Mercedes-Benz is about – “the Best or Nothing“.
