Celebrating Bertha Benz

Bertha Benz, a woman that has all my respect and praise for her work and the role she played. If she had not done what she did, we would not be living in a world full of cars, let alone reading about some fast cars on my blog.

We all know about Dr Carl Benz, how he in 1886 patented the world’s first automobile vehicle. The Patent Motor Wagen was a horseless carriage powered by a single cylinder motor. Carl unveiled his invention to the world in 1886. But contrary to his expectations, it failed to create any interest and people didn’t want to buy it.

Carl Benz kept on making improvements to the Motor Wagen and identified each iteration with a number. He made the Benz Patent Motor-Wagen No 3 in 1888. But by this time, Carl was losing his patience and did not want to continue working further on this.

Bertha had fallen in love with Carl when he explained his early drafts and plans of building such an automobile to her. She was interested in locomotives from an early age, thanks to some exposure from her father. So this idea had not just blown her mind but took her heart too. She wanted to support Carl with his vision and when Carl was about to give up, Bertha decided to do something herself about the situation.

This was a time when women were not treated equal and given the restricted to just doing household chores and bringing up kids. She decided to show the world what an automobile could do. In August 1888, together with her sons Richard and Eugen, and without the knowledge of her husband, Bertha Benz took to the road with the Benz Patent Motor-Wagen No 3. She was undeterred by the fact that some stretches of the roads, which were normally used only by horses and carriages, were anything but suitable for the automobile. Lack of fuel, clogged valves or wiring chafed-through to breaking point – she found a solution to every difficulty on the journey. She resorted to a garter, a hat-pin, and plundered the ligroin stocks of pharmacies along the route. When the fuel ran out completely outside Wiesloch, the Motor Car had to be pushed for several kilometers. Bertha got down herself to help.

Because of her persistence and this long journey, the Motor-wagen gained attention. And finally Carl made a total of 25 of these and sold them between 1886 and 1893. It also gained a title of being the world’s first mass production automobile.

Detroit Auto Show 2016

As promised in my previous post, here are the best production/ production-ready Cars of the Detroit Auto Show 2016!

1. 2017 Ford GT

The 2017 Ford GT showcased at the Detroit Auto Show, is expected to go in production in late 2016. This is just one of the 12 Ford Performance Vehicles that will come by 2020. The Ford GT features a rear-wheel drive, a mid-mounted engine, and a sleek, aerodynamic, two-door coupe body shell. It is powered by the next-generation twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6, the most powerful EcoBoost production engine yet, producing more than 600hp.

2. 2017 Infiniti Q60 Sports Coupe

The 2017 Infiniti Q60 Sports Coupe is production ready and will be available in the following variants: 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine producing either 300hp or 400hp; a 2.0-litre gasoline engine that is turbo-charged to produce 208hp. The base model will come with an aluminum trim on the inside, with an option to choose black wood. The higher end models will be available with carbon-fiber highlights and an option to choose white or red leather seating. The Infiniti Q60S is like a really awesome comeback for Nissan’s luxury brand – as it was highly loved by critics starting from concept model itself carrying over almost every appreciated thing into the production version. The Q60S feels like one of the best cars ever from Infiniti till date. It has  a really functional design that looks stunning too. In fact, the Q60S could easily be the car I would want to drive straight out of the Detroit Auto Show! 😀

3. The new BMW M2 Coupe

The first M line car in the 2-series for BMW was showcased at the Detroit Auto Show – the M2 Coupe which is a rear-wheel drive, high performance sports coupe. It is powered by a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder engine which produces 365hp (one for each day! 😀 – sorry for the bad joke). BMW claims the M2 can do 0-62miles (0-100kms) in 4.3 seconds and comes with a top-speed of 155 mph (250 kmph).

4. 2017 Chrysler Pacifica

The new Chrysler Pacifica (or Chrysler Town & Country as it was previously called) is one of the most significant launches for FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), as they have tried to reinvent the minivan segment they originally created. It is a attempt to make the minivan compelling again for the new generation. One important fact is that Pacifica will be available in both conventional and plug-in hybrid versions. There is a lot of new tech coming in the Pacifica – a 360 degree camera view, automatic parallel and perpendicular parking, forward-collision warning & mitigation, lane-departure warning & mitigation, rear backup sensing with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control that can bring the Pacifica to a complete halt and hold it there, and several other active & passive systems. Feels like the minivan is here to stay and gain a good number of sales!

5. 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor

The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor was originally unveiled at the 2015 edition of the Detroit Auto Show, and this year Ford has taken the chance to introduce the Raptor in its SuperCrew form. It is based on the aluminum-bodied F-150 SuperCrew. The Raptor SuperCrew rides on a 145.0-inch wheelbase—a foot longer than the standard SuperCab-based model—and has four front-hinged doors and the SuperCrew’s 5.5-foot bed. It is powered by the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine, whose output hasn’t been disclosed by Ford.

6. 2017 Mercedes Benz E-Class

The E-Class finally gets the new design language that was originally seen on the S-Class back in 2014, which was later adopted by the C-Class last year. Called the “sensually purified” design language, the new E-Class unveiled here at the Detroit Auto Show might look much like its other siblings until you see the badge! It carries the new iconic “stardust effect” taillamps, futuristic LED matrix headlamps and the signature grill and windows. There are a few dimensional changes on the E-Class – 2.6 inches have been added between the axles and 1.7 inches overall. Height and width of the new E-Class are down a fraction of an inch. The wheel sizes are up to 19 & 20 inches. It will be offered in Luxury & Sport flavours.

What’s interesting here is that the new car comes with loads of new tech which not even available on the current S-Class! To name a few – semi-autonomous driving, autonomous lane changing, driver-supervised autonomous parking, the ability to use your cellphone as the key, highly improved auto-braking system.

The E300 is the first of the new E-Class cars that is confirmed. The others set to get the new E-Class treatment are the E63 AMG & a new powerful E450 AMG, as also plug-in hybrid & diesel versions. Also expected are the Coupe & Convertible versions too!

7. 2017 Mercedes Benz SLC

This is actually the SLK rebadged as per the nomenclature changes that Mercedes had announced at the end of 2014. The SLK badge will be dropped after being in use for close to 20 years. Since the SLK was close to the C-Class, it will now wear the SLC badge. In the 2017 edition unveiled at he Detroit Auto Show, it gets a facelift and a new powertrain. On the exterior, you have the updated modern grill, optional LED headlamps and new “sensually purified” taillamps. On the interior, most of the things remain the same with minor updates to the controls and trim. It will continue to possess the two features unique to this class – the Airscarf, a ventilator system that blows warm air at your neck, and a panaromic glass roof whose opacity can be changed at the push of a button.

The big update is under the hood – a twin-turbocharged V6 in place of the V8 in the AMG version. The SLK350’s 3.5-litre V6 is history. The SLK300 with the 2.0-litre turbo engine will return as the SLC300 producing 241hp. The SLK55 AMG will be replaced by the Mercedes-AMG SLC43, for which the pictures will do a better talking (Love the red!).

That’s enough drooling for one post! There’s more from the Detroit Auto Show coming soon – concept cars and special mentions! Stay tuned for another post about the Detroit Auto Show! Till then do follow the blog on Instagram @thebestCARblogever and on Facebook. 🙂

Why I started ‘The Best CAR Blog Ever!’

What’s this? Why am I not writing about CARS and starting a post on why I started writing a blog?? Relax! I know this is ‘The Best CAR Blog Ever!!‘. I haven’t forgotten, its all about cars, more cars…just cars! Let me tell you about when I started blogging.

For those who know me and have followed this blog since the beginning, they know I started out in October 2012. But that will not tell you about the reasons or the situation at that time.

I was pursuing my Diploma in Journalism, had reached half-way through it & it wasn’t that easy. I put in efforts & equally learned from my mistakes. For the first time, I had pursued writing at lengths. From the admission interview to all the classes that I attended, I had only one answer about my interest in journalism – “I am interested in getting into Automobile Journalism.” I was exceptional in terms of my choice then; there were many brilliant students (most) with mainstream journalism interests.

I felt a bit disconnected, because I would be speaking Latin & Greek for others, if I spoke about automobiles. And neither could I really speak well on other fields. I tried to write in other streams, I wouldn’t be able to even beat my previous assignments.

So, some how I needed to write about what I really wanted to do. A professor suggested me to take up blogging as a practice for topics of my interest (and still improve on my writing on the rest of the topics of the class).

That’s where my blogging journey started; my journey of excellence. I had a different take when I started out, I focused on covering news, but I would be left behind (I was new to writing and slow!). Then I understood, even if I don’t cover each & every news, somebody else would. I had to only focus on my writing, my topics. If I want to do better, I need to strive for excellence. And here is what I wrote about excellence in my previous post:

“It is about giving your best, exceeding expectations & setting standards for others. It is the constant achievement through hard work, dedication and discipline… ” –

The CARS of Excellence from Mercedes-Benz - My previous post
The CARS of Excellence from Mercedes-Benz – My previous post

I did the same what Mercedes-Benz did; we strove for excellence. They achieved their goals, they set a benchmark at making the best luxury cars & were awarded for it. I had the goal of making this ‘The Best CAR Blog…Ever!’, I have written posts that I have been appreciated for, I got rewarded with a chance to be part of interesting car events, meet various people from the industry and interact with them, all at the completion of just a year in blogging.

Here is one thing that Mercedes-Benz and I would agree on & follow too:

The Habit of Excellence
The Habit of Excellence

Make it your habit too, in whatever you do, not just blogging! Its your life; so take excellence very personally!

Cars with the ability to show what excellence means

When discussing about CARS,  one or more of the people in the conversation will say “This FOO is an excellent car! That BAR is no match for this one!”. We would have our own choice and thinking of what makes for an excellent car. But there is a specific set of CARS that have proven this year what excellence means.

Before getting to these cars, let me clear what I think of excellence to be (and should be).

Excellence is the quality of being excellent. It is about giving your best, exceeding expectations & setting standards for others. It is the constant achievement through hard work, dedication and discipline.

But, excellence is NOT success. There is a difference. Success is when we compare our achievements with what other people have done already. Excellence, on the other hand, is when we compare our achievements with what we have done before; and when we see that we have grown, we have beaten our own records and achieved — excellence.

“Competition with oneself, is the way to excellence.”

You’ll find lots of links to explain you on that topic, so lets get to what we were talking about here.  So which cars have i think  proven their excellence??

Take a look at this.

Their excellence has been appreciated and reflected in the awards they have got. Being awarded as the ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ at six different award events of a single year is no joke. It is a sign of excellence. If you’ve seen any of the award ceremonies of this year, you will have guessed by now, I am talking about Mercedes-Benz.

It hasn’t ended there. Ten other awards (16 in total), across various other categories have been awarded. The A-Class, B-Class, E-Class, the E63 AMG and the GL-Class have won these awards.

Here is a snap to show who got what!

Mercedes-Benz marked 2013 as the ‘Year of Offensive’ and launched fascinating products, expanded its network spread and provided its customers value-added after sales service, according to their strategy. Setting benchmarks in the luxury segment (for its competitors), is their strategy of the ‘Year of Excellence’ – 2014.

They have already began the year’s celebrations, by the successful launch of the new S-Class, while showcasing the CLA 45 AMG, GLA and the M-Guard at the Indian Auto Expo 2014. [Photo Gallery:  #MercAtAutoExpo2014]

Here is what they’ve got to say, while they celebrate – “When you pursue the path of excellence, the world makes you a winner.”

This is what Mercedes-Benz is about – “the Best or Nothing“.

What comes after B?? C? No, Mercedes says A!

Well your logic (and your primary education will tell you 😛 ) that C comes after B… But Mercedes has different plans! After launching the B-Class in India in September last year, Mercedes has decided to launch their A-Class on May 30, 2013.

The A-Class A180
The A-Class A180

While B-Class is currently the cheapest premium offering from Mercedes, with the price varying around Rs23-25 lakhs (depending on the variant), the A-class just might take its tag away. Prices of the A-Class are expected to start at Rs 22 lakh which is quite attractive if you can avoid thinking of it as just an ordinary ‘hatch’ and have enough money too!

Th B-Class B-180
Th B-Class B-180

The current B-Class comes with a four-cylinder in-line, 1595cc, direct-injection, turbo-petrol engine mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch box. A 1.8-litre diesel motor will join the petrol unit later this year. The B-Class has two cars in the current market, the B-180 and the B-180 Sport.

You can find the comparison here.

Unlike most other Mercedes on sale in India, the A-Class car is not well suited to being chauffeured around in (even I wouldn’t want to be driven around in this one 😛 ) . With its confident profile and sporty roofline, the A-Class is targeted more at owner-drivers. Mercedes is hoping that the extremely youthful design of the car, the very modern interiors and its sporty driving dynamics will appeal to the young and the young at heart, just like it has done in Europe; where the car is currently a runaway success.

The A-Class A180
The A-Class A180 has got the Angel-Eyes!

When Mercedes launches the new A-Class at the end of May, the first pair of models to hit our shores will be the A180 CDI diesel (108bhp) and the A180 petrol (121bhp). The A-Class might not be an instant hit and a volume seller for sure, but the new A-Class will deliver many of the luxurious trappings of a Mercedes in a very attractive and modern package to those who opt for it…

Share your thoughts about the A-Class and B-Class!
